Umuaka Police Station came to existence during the Biafra war period, when various types of crime and anti social behaviours started occurring in Akahland. Which were as the result of the starvation, displacement, joblessness, disorderliness, high mortality and over crowded population. It was a period when the traditional and cultural ways of maintaining laws and orders in Akahland cease to work. People failed to abide to the societal norms and values that held the integrity of Akahland. Various type of weapon and ammunition where at the disposal of the mass. Weapons were easily collected from returning soldiers and some from dead soldiers at war front. Murder was easily committed during the period. Some turned to robbery in order to escape from the hand of hunger and starvation (kwashiorkor) which was the highest killing machine during the war.

As the war intensified, the situation deteriorated the more, the weak were left for dead but the strong and fit were bound to survive by all means. However, the chiefs in Umuaka asked the Biafra administrator to allocate police station in Akahland so that they will take proper control of the status quo.

The Police station was initially located near Afor Umuaka market, exactly opposite Chief Nnaji's compound, from whom she derived her first name "Ama Nnaji" which was popular among people of that generation. The station remained at that location for number of years until the federal government built the current police station which is sited about 200m from the old location. The Police Station has been of great service to the people of Akahland in maintaining peace and order and resolving various disputes among members of Akah society and beyond.

In 2005, the current police station was destroyed by angry mob following a fatal incident course by some police officers from the station who were on roadblock along Njaba bridge. Read more of the story... After the rampage, the police station was knocked out of use. There were rumours that the station could be permanently relocated from Umuaka to somewhere else. After some series of negotiation between Akah people and the Imo State government\police commission, it was decided that Akah people should be responsible for the refurbishing of the vandalized police station.

However, the refurbishing of the station was financed by Akah citizens in USA (ANUUSA) couple with the financial contribution of the home base. The station is now functioning to it full potential.
