In 1977, Umuaka girls Secondary Technical School was established to facilitates girls education in Umuaka. At the beginning, the school was originally intended for both boys and girls education (Mix school), but after the second year of her establishment, she was restructured to be only for girls education. The reason behind that was not far fetched, owing to the fact about the availability of a reputable boys secondary school (St. Saviours Secondary school) which could accommodate the male students, so that the girls would have enough space for themselves.
However, Umuaka people had been going through various difficulties in financing the education of their daughters in distant girls secondary schools such as: Owerri-Nkworji Girls Secondary, Ihioma Girls Secondary, St Catherine's Nkwere, Akabor Girls, Owerri Girls, etc. Besides, Not every parent could afford the financial responsibilities of such distant institutions. This factor hindered many brilliant Umuaka girls from attending secondary education. Most of the less privileged girls resorted in learning tailoring and other petit trades.
Umuaka people worked hard to ensure that their daughters would not continue to be disadvantaged in education, owing to the fact that they understood the importance of female education in the society. The planning and the construction of the school structures was generously financed by Umuaka people. The opening ceremony of the school was colourful. Various dance groups in the town performed at the ceremony to show their enthusiasm and love for education. Imo state commissioner for education was among the guest of honour at the ceremony.
The first Principal of the school was Mrs Hope Obi, nicknamed Iron Lady due to her no tolerance (no nonsense) and high level of discipline attitude towards her subjects. Her management of the school was to the best of Umuaka interest and girls education at large. She was highly involved in the welfare of the girls. She was the head and the instructor of the school Cultural dance group "Egwu Amara" which gained much popularity in Umuaka and Nkwere/Isu LGA. She was respected and loved by the students. She left the school in 1986 after completing her tenure of office. She was succeeded by Mrs Joy Abubarugo who followed her foot steps.
Since the establishment of the school, there has been unimaginable improvement in girls education in Umuaka and the neighbouring towns. The number of girls attending secondary education has drastically out-numbered the boys. Before it's establishment, the ratio was 7boys to 3girls (7:3), but after the establishment of the school the ration drastically dropped to 4boys to 6girls (4:6). At the moment, 95% of Umuaka girls attain secondary education before proceeding with any other life endeavours.
The School has produced many successful female academicians in various fields of human endeavour, such as Medicine, civil service, education, armed forces, judicial service, business, banking, engineering, architecture, and etc. The return on investment of the effort of Umuaka people in establishing such an institution is far beyond their imagination.
In addition, there are also other secondary institutions in Akahland that are of tremendous help in educating Umuaka girls, such as the two prominent commercial secondary school in Umuaka: Akajiaku Commercial Academy and Christ The King Commercial School (CKC). A lot of Akah girls obtained their secondary education from these institutions. They are private schools owned by Akah indigenes: Late Chief Ben Opara and Chief Udeagwu, respectively.
