Umuaka Welfare and Development Association UK, is an organization of people from Akahland (all the area of the old Umuaka autonomous community) and their relatives living in the United Kingdom. It is an Akah diaspora body in the United Kingdom that brings all Akah sons, daughters and their relatives together.
In October 2001, Umuaka welfare and development Association was Official formed by a group of Akah sons who came to pay condolence visit to Luke and Basil Ukonu for their bereaved father. The people present in the unplanned inaugural meeting were as follows; Jude Alino, Leonard Offorji, Eddy Iwuanoro, Sam Alakwe, Cosmas Ugochukwu, Barry Izunwa, Polycarp Ibegbulem, Evans Duruanyanwu and their host Luke Ukonu. The utmost objective for the formation of the organization is to build a strong unified body that will bring all Akah sons, daughters and their relatives in the United kingdom and Ireland in one umbrella, so that they will be able to get to know one another and also assist each other in time of needs.
At the inception of the organization, there was no permanent venue for meetings, the members were so patriotic and generous that they volunteered and made their homes, food and drinks available for the hosting of the meeting, that is, the venue for the meetings were rotating from one member's home to another. The meeting venues were predominately at the homes of the members that lived in London hence majority of the members reside in London vicinity. Members travels from various parts of United Kingdom and even Ireland to attend the meetings.
Besides, 2001 was not the first time Umuaka people in the United Kingdom and Ireland were able to form a union. There had been a union of umuaka people in UK in the early 90's, under the name 'Umuaka Development Town Union'. The union was not formally organized as there was neither executive nor constitution for the union. It was a sort of dinners group that occasionally gather to celebrate in the company of each other. Towards the end of the 90's the group cease to function due to inadequate organization and inability to formalize their activities.
However, as the population of Akah in the UK increased and many new comers were increasingly encountering various problems associated with relocation to a foreign country, then came the need for Akah people in UK and Ireland to have a strong body that will take the responsibility of the welfare of all Akah people in the United Kingdom and Ireland, providing them with material and immaterial resources that would enable them to find comfort in their new country of abode. This move led to the formation of Umuaka Welfare and Development Association UK and Ireland.
A few years after the formation of the organization, Irish section of the organization decided to separate from the Uk base organization, owing to the fact that their population was enough to be an independent organization in their country of residence. In 2005, the venue for the meeting was permanently fixed at Old Ezekiel Night Club (2nd Floor), 1 Rye Lane, Peckham, London SE15 4ST (still meeting venue till date). General meeting holds every two months, except in the case of emergency. Jude Alino was the first Elected president of the Association, his tenure lasted for 3yrs. He was succeeded by Eng Austin Okoro who reigned for a standard term of 2yrs. In August 2006, Okey Emeshiobi Nworji succeeded Austin Okoro through an elective poll. He is the incumbent chairman of the organization.
